- Changing Sparkplugs on the Duratec V-6 (98 SVT)
- Removal of the plenum is NOT necessary. Wait until the engine
cools. This process is not difficult, but will require
patience, and a lot of leaning over the motor. :)
The process can easily be broken down into two phases, the
front three plugs, and the rear three plugs.
Replacing the front three plugs:
- Remove the plastic cover from the front cylinder bank,
three 7mm bolts.
- Slide the cover to the side to clear the PCV hose,
twist, then lift off. It will not lift straight up.
- Remove the three 10mm bolts holding the silver box to
the heads, and move it out of the way.
- Remove the sparkplug wires by grabbing them and using
a slight twist while pulling up.
- Using a spray solvent like B-12, wash the plug holes
and blow out with air. This gets rid of anything that
could fall into the cylinders.
- Remove plugs. You will need an 8" extenstion to get
the plugs.
- Gap the new plugs .052-.056 and install to 7-14
Ft-Lbs. I used anti seize but not much. NOTE: the
Bosch +4s do NOT need to be gapped
- Reverse the above process. I used WD-40 on the plug
wires on both ends and they went back together nicely.
Replacing the rear three plugs:
- Remove all six of the plug wires from the coil
pack. They just clip on but you have to use your
fingers or a screwdriver to clear the clamps. Twist
slightly to remove.
- Remove the low voltage connector to the coil pack.
- Remove the coil , four 7mm bolts. A 1/4" drive 7mm
wobble socket and an 8" extension would have been a
real help here, but I managed. NOTE: The two ground
lugs so they can be replaced when you put it back
together.

- Remove plugs. There is clearance for a socket and an
8" extension. You are working blind on the rear
plugs, but can easily lean on the manafold to see.
Prepare for back pain.... :)

It took about an hour to do it. The coil pack is marked as to
which wires go where so its hard to screw it up. Remember the
ground lugs under two of the bolts. I would also inspect the
wires for arcing as they might be shot if the gaps of the old
plugs are way out like mine were.
The Ford part number for the replacement plugs is AWSF32-F or
AWSF32-PP. The Bosch Platinum +4 plugs are #4458.
