- Here is how I accomplished the removal of the door guards.
- 1) Wash the car.
- 2) Soak the area between the door guard and the door with
"GOO-Gone". GOO-Gone can be purchased about anywhere,
and is handy for removing stickem from about any
material, and is safe to use on paint as it is oil
based.
- 3) After letting the stickem soak up the GOO-Gone for about
30 minutes, it's time to have fun. On the 98 SVT, the
door guards are held on by two thin strips of tape.
Once you get one of the ends of the plastic guards
started, just grab it with your hand and pull slowly.
The slower you pull the better, as the stickem will tend
to stay with the plastic guard. Once you have them
removed, it should look like the "During" picture to the
left.
- 4) Now for the hard / long part, the removal of the stickem
/ tape. Further soak the stickem with more GOO-Gone.
Then use your thumbs, fingers, and / or 100% cotton
cloths to slowly roll the tape off. It's not that hard,
just time consuming. To remove the stickem left behind,
use more Goo-Gone on a rag and wipe away.
- 5) Wash the car again to remove the oily residue left
behind by the Goo-Gone.
- 6) You will probably notice a difference in the paint color
where the door guards were. Don't worry, this is easy
to correct. The process I used is outlined further in my
Car Care Instructions, but
here is a quick summary:
-
- First, apply Meguiars Medallion Premium Paint
Cleaner (M-9716) to the area. I applied it twice,
making sure to work it in thoroughly.
-
- Then apply Meguiars #7 Show Car Glaze (M-0716)
to bring out the shine.
-
- Then a touch of Meguiars #26 Hi-Tech Yellow
Wax (M-2616) to finish protecting the area.
-
- Then wax the entire door with your wax of choice.
- 7) Now take a picture of a job well done! :)
